England and Australia fought out a hard battle at Edgbaston on Day 5 of the first Ashes Test. The Kangaroos defeated the Three Lions by two wickets in what was a memorable win. The start of play was delayed after the first session was held up due to rain. After the rain receded there were 67 overs of play available where England needed 7 wickets to win, and Australia needed 174 to win.

Scott Boland hung around, but he was shown the door by Stuart Broad after scoring 20 off 40 balls with two fours. The innings of the night watchman came to an end. Usman Khawaja kept on chipping away from one end while Travis Head came and played a short and sharp knock of 16 off 24 balls with three fours.Β  After Head was dismissed by Moeen Ali. Cameron Green strode out to the crease.

Pat Cummins scored an unbeaten 44 off 73 balls to take Australia through at Edgbaston

The tall lanky man came in and made 28 off 66 balls with two fours. Ollie Robinson picked up his wicket after his brief stay. Alex Carey walked in next but had a very bad time at the crease. Joe Root dropped two catches of Carey after taking it the third time to dismiss him. Ben Stokes kept bowling with the old ball and held it further. He did not ask for the new ball which was bizarre.

Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins came together when Australia were in a sticky situation. The score was 227-8 and there were still some runs to be scored. Stokes continued with Root for another over after he had dismissed Carey. It was not second time lucky for Root as Pat Cummins clobbered him for two sixes and put the pressure back on England.

Cummins found an able partner in Nathan Lyon who was cool and calm under pressure. They forged together a very important alliance and took Australia home. Lyon made an unbeaten 16 off 28 balls with two fours. Cummins struck an unbeaten 44 off 73 balls with four fours and two sixes in what was a captain’s knock.

Despite rain playing a part in the match, it was riveting battle of Test cricket which was fought over five days. Khawaja for his terrific batting exploits was declared the player of the match. The left-hander made a sublime 141 in the first innings and a valuable 65 in the second innings. With this famous win, the Kangaroos have a 1-0 lead over the Three Lions in the 5-match Ashes series.
