The ODI series between India and the West Indies has started on a good note for India. India defeated the West Indies by 5 wickets and lead the series 1-0. On a tricky wicket in Bridgetown, Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. The wicket had pace and extra bounce on it, which was extracted well by the new ball duo of Hardik Pandya and Mukesh Kumar.
Hardik dismissed Kyle Mayers early and gave the first breakthrough to the Indian team. Alick Athanaze played some good shots before getting dismissed by Mukesh Kumar, thanks to a sensational catch from Ravindra Jadeja. Brandon King was dismissed by Shardul Thakur, who was introduced to the attack as the first change bowler.
Middle Order collapse from West Indies
Once the pacers did their job, the spinners took on the responsibility of dismissing the middle-order batters. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the middle and lower middle order batters like Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, and Romario Shepherd. Only Shai Hope batted well for the West Indies and scored 43 runs in 45 balls. But even he could not stay long in the middle, thanks to Kuldeep Yadav.
Once the prized wicket was fetched, there was no stopping the Indian bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav ran through the lower order of West Indies and claimed a 4-wicket haul. West Indies were dismissed for a total of 114 runs in just 23 overs. India tested their lesser experienced batters. Ishan Kishan was promoted up the order and scored well.
As Kishan batted well from his end, the batters on the other end struggled to score runs. Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Shardul Thakur all failed. In the end, Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma ensured that India did not suffer any more hiccups. The two experienced batters took India home, as the visiting side won the first ODI by 5 wickets. The batting from both sides was rather mediocre. Kuldeep Yadav was awarded the Player of the Match for his bowling.
