On 5 January 2023, team India locked horns with Sri Lanka in Pune for the second match of the ongoing T20I series. The Men in Blue managed to win the first match by two runs. So, they were looking to seal the series by winning this clash. While the visitors were looking to win this clash to keep them alive in the series.
However, team India gave two debut caps in the first match of the series. They handed debut caps to Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi. Mavi came up with an impressive performance with the ball. But, Rahul Tripathi did not get a debut cap. However, his dream of donning the Indian jersey came true when he got the debut cap in the second game.

Rahul Tripathi was all smiles when he was given the debut cap. The Indian Cricket Board also shared the video on Twitter with the caption: Congratulations to Rahul Tripathi who is all set to make his T20I debut for #TeamIndia #INDvSL @mastercardindia.” The batting coach of the Indian cricket team, Vikram Rathore gave him the cap.
After that, all players were seen congratulating him for his achievement. Rahul Tripathi has been a terrific performer in recent days in the Indian T20 League. In 76 matches, he has scored 1798 runs at an average of 28.09. Rahul had a fantastic 2022 season as he scored 413 runs in 14 matches, at an average of 37.55.
Speaking about this, the former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir said: “He has earned this call, he has done so well in the Indian T20 League and the domestic cricket. I hope he can do well because he is a quality player. He is one player who has got a good attitude, he has a fearless approach whether he bats at No. 3, No. 4. He can be very very destructive, hope the team management gives him a long rope.”
