On this day, India beat West Indies in the 1983 World Cup final to create a historic triumph in England. It is the 40th anniversary of that triumph. The Indian’s who were less fancied, trumped the men from the Caribbean at Lords in a low-scoring final. India denied a three-time World Cup streak to the West Indies, World champions in 1975 and 1979. The 1983 World Cup was the last time that ODIs were played as 60 over games.

West Indies won the toss and elected to field. India was not up to the mark with the bat, as they could post just 183 in their 60 overs. The main contributor who helped India get some semblance was Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who made a stroke-filled 38 off 57 balls with seven fours and one six. He got crucial support from Mohinder Amarnath, who made 26 off 80 balls with three fours. Sandeep Patil also made a vital 27 off 48 balls with one six. Andy Roberts was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies. He took 3-32 in his ten overs.

West Indies lost to India by 40 runs in the World Cup final in 1983

Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Larry Gomes picked up two wickets each in their respective spells. In the second innings, India knew they had a minimal score to defend, but they gave it their all. The West Indies lost Goron Greenidge early to Balwinder Singh Sandhu. Then Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards got together and had a partnership. Haynes fell when the score was at 50. Richards, in particular, looked in menacing touch as he threatened to take the game away from India when he batted on 33 of 28 balls with seven fours.

But Madan Lal picked up his wicket against the run of play, assisted with a marvellous running catch by Kapil Dev. From that point on, West Indies lost three wickets after the fall of Richards. Marshall and Jeff Dujon scored 18 off 51 and 25 off 73 balls, respectively and put up some resistance, but once they were dismissed, there was no stopping them as the West Indies lost by 40 runs. They batted for just 52 overs and ended up on 140.

Lal picked up 3-31 in his 12-over spell. Amarnath also took 3-12 in his seven overs spell. Balvinder Sandhu took 2-32 in his nine overs bowled, and Roger Binny and Kapil picked up a wicket each from their respective spells in what was a magical moment in Indian cricket.
