T20 cricket, the shortest format of the game, originated in England in 2003. The idea was to create a more fast-paced and spectator-friendly version of traditional cricket matches. The first Official T20 international match was played between England and Australia in 2005.

The first T20 International World Cup was played in 2007 in South Africa. India was the winner of the First edition of the T20I World Cup, led by MS Dhoni. Many T20 captains led their teams brilliantly in the past but faded away from international cricket after the glory.
