Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene lauded the young Sri Lankan team that made the country proud by clinching the Asia Cup 2022 final after defeating Pakistan in the final. After a humiliating loss at the hands of Afghanistan in the group stage, Sri Lanka did not let it haunt them as they won all their remaining games to win the tournament.
In the final, Sri Lankan top order collapsed and the team entered into a setback straightaway with five early wickets. However, it was some terrific rear-guard action from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga with the bat that changed the course of the match, while Pramod Madushan continued his impressive start to his T20I career with a four-wicket haul to his name.
Hasaranga was rewarded with the Player of the Tournament award for his all-round display in the tournament as he picked up three wickets in a single over in the final. The men from the emerald isle turned all the tides against them in their favour and scripted an incredible turnaround with game changing performances right through the tournament.
Jayawardene has now showered praise on the Sri Lankan side for their performance and said that it was a good toss to lose. Notably, Shanaka was winning most of the tosses in the tournament until the final. The island nation has been struggling economically and suffering the brunt of bad policies and high inflation. The Asia Cup win will, certainly, uplift the spirits of all Sri Lankans and give them happy memories to talk about.

Sri Lanka will look to take inspiration from this Asia Cup title and play well in the qualifiers for the 20-20 World Cup.
