‘This is God level’ – Fans react as Glenn Maxwell’s heroics seal record-breaking chase as Australia stuns Afghanistan in ODI World Cup 2023

Glenn Maxwell's double century helps Australia beat Afghanistan by 3 wickets in ODI World Cup 2023.

In a thrilling clash at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Australia faced off against Afghanistan in the 39th match of the ODI World Cup 2023. It was a day that witnessed stunning individual performances, remarkable team efforts, and a record-breaking chase.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first, setting the stage for a remarkable contest. The Afghan openers, with their aggressive intent, caught the Australian bowlers off guard. Ibrahim Zadran was the star of the day, scoring a breathtaking 129 not out off 143 balls to mark Afghanistan’s maiden World Cup century. With Zadran leading the charge, other Afghan batters found the freedom to score freely, propelling Afghanistan to its highest ODI total of 291 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Australia came out to bat with determination, but Naveen Ul Haq had different plans. He swiftly dismissed Travis Head for a duck and Mitchell Marsh for 24 runs. Unbeknownst to Australia, they were heading for a major upset as Afghanistan’s bowlers continued to take wickets in quick succession. The Australians found themselves struggling at 91 for 7 after 19 overs.

It was at this juncture that Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins emerged as the saviours of Australia. Glenn Maxwell, in particular, played one of the finest innings of his life, orchestrating an incredible comeback. Maxwell’s remarkable double century turned the tables for Australia, transforming what seemed like an impossible chase into a reality.

Maxwell’s extraordinary knock of 201 runs came off just 128 balls, featuring 21 boundaries and 10 sixes. He achieved the second-fastest double century in ODI cricket history, trailing only Ishan Kishan, who reached his double century in 126 balls. Maxwell also joined the elite club of cricketers who have scored a double century in ODI cricket, making it a truly historic performance.

What made Maxwell’s innings even more astounding was the fact that he battled a significant injury during his time at the crease. In the latter part of his innings, he could barely run and had to settle for walking singles. Maxwell’s memorable innings was also marked by a fortunate escape when he was dropped on 33 by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Even if Maxwell had not played this remarkable innings, Australia’s victory would have been a record chase, as 291 runs had never been successfully chased at the ground. With this spectacular win, Australia solidified their position in the top four of the ODI World Cup 2023, leaving fans and cricket enthusiasts in awe of Maxwell’s unforgettable performance.
