The Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai buzzed with excitement yesterday as all ten IPL franchises faced off in the annual player auction. This high-stakes event holds the power to reshape a team’s destiny, where strategic brilliance can fuel championship dreams while missteps can lead to a season of struggle.

Every year, the IPL auction is more than just a business transaction; it’s a stage where lives are transformed, destinies rewritten, and cricket dreams take flight. This year was no different, as several players saw their fortunes skyrocket with record-breaking deals.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were the big earners. The Australian duo shattered the IPL auction record, becoming the most expensive player in the league’s history. Cummins, the reigning World Cup-winning captain, fetched a staggering Rs. 20.50 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad, while his pace-bowling partner, Starc, went for an equally impressive Rs. 24.75 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders.

The developments at yesterday’s IPL Auction made way for the PSL to be heavily trolled on social media.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins’ record-breaking fees in the IPL auction weren’t simply based on talent, though their skill as world-class pace bowlers is undeniable. Their staggering price tags were a result of various factors swirling together to create a bidding frenzy. Both Stars and Cummins boast a lot of experience and have performed consistently in international cricket. For teams, they’re match-winners, not gamble picks. To add to that, top-tier fast bowlers are rare commodities, especially those with T20 experience. Franchises desperate for bowling fire-power engaged in bidding wars, driving the price sky-high.

Fans brutally troll PSL

The IPL’s golden shower of cash on the two Aussies sparked a monsoon of memes and mockery on social media, with Indian fans drenching the Pakistan Super League in scorn for its apparent financial drought. Trolled for its low budget and player salaries, the PSL became a punching bag for those celebrating the IPL’s caviar dreams. Several people brought to public attention the fact Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins’ IPL salaries are probably more than the PSL’s budget.

Babar Azam is the highest-paid player in the PSL with the amount being just above 4 Cr, which is around 20 Cr less than what Starc stands to earn in the upcoming IPL.
