Star Sri Lankan pacer replaces Gus Atkinson in Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2024

After Mark Wood from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pulled out from the Indian Premier League (IPL) another England pacer Gus Atkinson from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has withdrawn his name from the IPL.

In the mini-auction of IPL 2024, Gus Atkinson was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 1 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders has named Sri Lanka fast bowler pacer Dushmantha Chameera as his replacement.

“Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named Dushmantha Chameera as a replacement for England pacer Gus Atkinson for the upcoming edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024,” the IPL release said. Dushmantha Chameera will join Kolkata Knight Riders at a price of INR 50 Lakh.

Dushmantha Chameera’s record in IPL

He is known for his pace and can cause a lot of trouble to the batters as he is able to swing the ball. In 2018 he was part of Rajasthan Royals and in IPL 2021 he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the 2022 IPL, he played for Lucknow Super Giants.

He played 12 matches for Lucknow Super Giants and took 9 wickets with an average of 42.67. While there was no reason given for the withdrawal of Gus Atkinson. But as per reports England and Wales Cricket board players have pulled out their names from the tournament to manage workload ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Dushmantha Chameera will play along with Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. In the mini-auction of IPL 2024, the fast sensational was picked for Rs. 24.75 which made him highest highest-paid player in IPL history. Kolkata Knight Riders already have big names like all-rounder Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, and Mitchell Starc at its service.

In the meantime, Dushmantha Chameera has a face injury while playing the first ODI for Sri Lanka against Afghanistan. He did not play the two ODI matches for the team. For the T20I series against Afghanistan Binura Fernando was named as his replacement.
