In a grand event at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, a remarkable statue of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was revealed. The bronze statue, standing at a towering 14 feet, was unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Sachin Tendulkar, joined by his family, was present at the ceremony, along with other dignitaries from the world of cricket. Even though the statue is magnificent, It has raised some eyebrows because it resembles Steve Smith.

The larger-than-life statue of Sachin Tendulkar, created by sculptor Pramod Kamble from Ahmednagar, captures the cricketing maestro in a pose that defines his legacy—the “lofted drive.” This iconic moment has been immortalized to pay homage to one of India’s most beloved sportsmen.
This event marks a historic first at the Wankhede Stadium, which has stood for nearly five decades as a fortress of cricket. It’s the first time a statue has been placed at this iconic venue, making it even more special.

While the unveiling of Sachin Tendulkar’s statue was a moment of pride for Indian cricket fans, it sparked some confusion on social media. Many fans noted a resemblance between the statue and Australian cricketer Steven Smith. The images of Steven Smith and Sachin Tendulkar’s statue have been widely shared, leading to some light-hearted banter online.
Regarding the statue, India skipper Rohit Sharma said, “Practice pe jab pahuche toh humne dekhna statue par itne closely dekhne nahi mila kyun ki hum practice kar rhe the aur press conference itna delay karwa diya humare media manager ne (laughs). Toh itna pass se dekhne ko nahi mila. We came back, I finished my batting and I came here now. Par mauka milega acche se dekhne ka.(Yes, we saw it when we came to practice, but couldn’t see it from close by. Our practice was also delayed by the media manager (laughs). But yeah, we will get to see it closely later.”
“Mujhe toh abhi yeh bhi nahi pata ki kaun sa shot hai vo. Ab kya bolu main usme? Straight lofted shot ka statue banaya hai wahan pe.(What more can I say, they have made a statue of a straight lofted shot. It’s nice, I hope you guys enjoyed it, we saw the statue, it’s fantastic,” the Indian captain added.
