India has performed impeccably in the ongoing ODI World Cup, winning all eight of their matches so far in convincing fashion. On the few occasions that India was challenged, the team responded with aplomb to emerge victorious. Fans and pundits alike have declared India as the overwhelming favourite to win the marquee tournament.

Much of the credit for India’s success in this tournament must go to captain Rohit Sharma, who has led from the front with impactful performances at the top of the order. Sharma has taken the initiative to attack the bowlers, which has given India strong starts and put their opponents under pressure. Rohit Sharma’s aggressive approach has rubbed off on his teammates, who have also played some exciting cricket in the quadrennial event.

As a captain too, he has been right on the money in terms of his tactics and decision-making. He has been extremely shrewd which has earned him plaudits from many experts. Beyond the World Cup too, Team India has experienced some remarkable successes under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. He has a winning percentage of over 70% in ODIs and T20Is, and he has led India to several series wins against top teams. In July 2022, Sharma became the first captain in T20I history to lead their team to 14 consecutive victories and he also delivered the ‘Asia Cup’ title recently.

Sourav Ganguly has revealed that Rohit Sharma was not keen on becoming India captain.

Rohit Sharma wasn’t keen: Sourav Ganguly

However, according to former BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, the elegant batter was not too keen on becoming captain. “Rohit Sharma wasn’t keen. It had gone to a stage where I told him ‘you’ll have to say yes otherwise I’ll make the announcement.’ Because he is an outstanding captain. And after Virat Kohli left, he was the best man to lead India. I am not surprised by what I am seeing,” Ganguly said in a chat with Kolkata TV. Rohit’s hesitation was down to India’s busy schedule and also the fact that we were already leading Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

India will play their final group-stage match against the Netherlands on Sunday, November 12th at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Following this match, India will most likely face New Zealand in the first semi-final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on November 15th. Indian fans will be hoping that their team can finally end the trophy drought that has extended to over a decade.

Ganguly would be a proud man if Rohit is able to take India to glory on home soil.
