India and Sri Lanka faced off in the first ODI at Assam in Guwahati after a three-match T20I series, which India won 2-1. On a slow pitch, which was ideal for scoring, with a lightning-fast outfield, India made good use of the conditions with an ideal start provided by Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who put on a partnership of 143 for the first wicket. Rohit made 83 off 67 with nine fours and three sixes.

When Rohit reached his half-century which was his 47th in ODIs. He dedicated the landmark to his pet dog, a beagle who had passed away on Monday January 9. The dog was named magic. On the show Breakfast with Champions, Rohit had alluded to how he did not get along with magic in the beginning but then started liking the dog and built a wonderful relationship with it.

Rohit has been in an initiative called Save the paws

Rohit added that the dog used to bark at him initially but then started liking him and interacting with him and was aware that he would come and visit Ritika Sajdeh’s house regularly and man and dog formed an inseparable bond.

Rohit has loved animals and along with his wife been part of an initiative called “save the paws” which is related to saving the rhinoceros. He said that he had been to Masai Mara and for the initiative he had to go and touch the Rhino from up close and it was one of the most frightening experiences of his life as the regular guard who used to tend to the animal was not there but there was a new guard who did the shift. Rohit was initially hesitant to touch the Rhino but, in the end, he came out unscathed. Rhino poaching is one of those occupations which causes threat to the species, and it is gruesome.

India went on to make 373-7 in their 50 overs. India were led by Virat Kohli who scored 113 off 87 balls with 12 fours and one six. This was his 45th century in ODIs and 73rd overall. Gill made a handy 70 off 60 balls with 11 fours and KL Rahul chipped in with 39 off 29 balls with four fours and one six.
