The hosting rights of the premier continental tournament, Asia Cup 2023, are with Pakistan. But there will be a slight twist. India can take on Pakistan and other teams in a neutral venue, meaning outside the country. In fact, this is a proposal which was mooted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The PCB is said to come up with the idea during the ACC meeting in Dubai last week, according to reports.

ACC President Jay Shah was also present at the meeting. There is no concrete conclusion has come about for the venue for India’s games. Some reports say that India’s games could be played in UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka or England and a decision will be taken factoring weather into account. The Indian Cricket Board has already made it clear that the team will not travel to Pakistan without Central Government clearance.

There will be logistical and financial implications if India’s fixtures are played outside Pakistan

If it ends up being an India-Pakistan final, then the fixture will not be held on Pakistan soil. “The proposal to play India games at a neutral venue (outside Pakistan) has been proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. They haven’t informed the Indian Cricket Board about which the neutral venue will be. The ACC hasn’t taken any decision on it. It will be discussed during the next meeting. There are logistics and financial implications too. At the same time we don’t know whether the official broadcaster will agree to this move because they will need another crew in another country,” quoted as saying by Indian Express.

It also remains to be seen how the other teams look at playing against India at a neutral venue. Jay Shah had earlier said that India will not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. The former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja had also replied in kind. He said that Pakistan will not come to 2023 World Cup in India. The teams hope to settle the issue and stage India’s fixtures out of Pakistan.

“It’s important to see how other members (of ACC) look at our stance on Asia Cup. What they think is important, but in the end, we must realise how much clout the Indian Cricket Board with its financial power carries in world cricket.” Najam Sethi had stated before the meeting took place.
