The non-striker runout made the headlines yet again as it happened in the closing stages of the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Guwahati. Mohammed Shami attempted to run out Dasun Shanaka after the latter was found outside his crease and executed the runout. The appeal was made but later was withdrawn at the behest of Rohit.

Rohit also revealed the reasoning behind this. When he was asked about it in the post-match presentation about the runout involving Shami, Rohit said,

“I mean, I had no idea Shami did that. He then went for an appeal. He was batting on 98, we got to be a little [easy, empathetic]. The way he batted was brilliant, so got to give it to him. We can not get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we will get him out but that was not something that we thought of. But hats off to him, he played really well,”

Rohit Sharma scored 83 off 67  balls at Guwahati

The incident happened in the 48th over of the Sri Lankan innings. Shanaka was batting on 98. India took back the appeal and this allowed the Sri Lankan skipper to get to his hundred. He came down the order at No. 6 and smashed a 108 off 88 balls with 12 fours and three sixes. Shanaka was in good form in the T20 series as well as he made 124 runs in the three T20Is against India.

Rohit received high praise from former Sri Lankan cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Angelo Mathews for his act.

“The real winner was the sportsmanship of Rohit Sharma for refusing to take the run out. I doff my cap to you!,” Jayasuriya had written on Twitter. “Not many captains would do this but hats off to @ImRo45 for withdrawing the appeal even though the law says so! Displaying great sportsmanship.” Angelo Mathews had said.

India won the game in the end by 67 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. India racked up the runs while batting as they made 373-7 in their 50 overs. The runs came from Shubman Gill, who made 70 off 60 balls with 11 fours. Rohit made 83 off 67 with nine fours and three sixes. Virat Kohli made 113 off 67 balls with 12 fours and one six.
