Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews showered high praise on Rohit Sharma after he decided to take back a non-striker run-out appeal against Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka in the first ODI at Guwahati which took place on Tuesday. India won the game by 67 runs.

The incident unfolded in the fourth ball of the 50th over. Mohammed Shami almost executed a run out at the non-striker’s end and the third umpire was pressed into service. But the appeal was taken back after a light intervention from Rohit.

This allowed Shanaka to get to his century. “Not many captains would do this but hats off to @ImRo45 for withdrawing the appeal even though the law says so! Displaying great sportsmanship.” Angelo Mathews wrote on Twitter.

“I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he (Shanaka) was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off, hats off to him, he played really well,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation. Rohit scored a stroke-filled 83 off 67 balls with nine fours and three sixes which helped India reach 373-7.

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill showcased some fine performances with the bat as Gill made 70 off 60 balls with 11 fours. Virat Kohli made his 45th ODI century which was a classy Kohli innings of 113 off 87 balls with 12 fours and 1 six. Then with the ball, Umran Malik picked up 3-57 in his eight overs. Mohammed Siraj picked up 2-30 in his seven overs. These two put up stand-out performances with the ball for India.

“We started off really well and to get that total was a great effort from all the batters. The platform was set to come out and play freely. I thought we could’ve bowled slightly better, but don’t want to be too critical of it although the dew was not so much. “We bowled well as a unit and if you want to win games like this, everyone has to come to the party. There are some areas we need to look at as a group and again it’s a team sport.” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.
