Robin Uthappa has come in support of Virat Kohli, and has called out the Delhi batter’s critics who want him sacked from the Indian team. In the last few months, Kohli has been struggling with the bat with only three fifties across all forms of the game. A while ago, the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper had called for the 33-year-old to be dropped from the team.
Meanwhile, Uthappa has said that nobody has the authority to question the former India skipper’s place in the team. The Karnataka player pointed out the match-winning capability of Virat across formats.
“We have neither the authority nor any ground to question his position or his capacity to win games,” said Uthappa on ‘CricChat Powered by Parimatch’.
“He’s (Kohli) a match winner and a proven one of the best in the world,” he added.
The Delhi player had a bad tour of England with the bat. Once again, he was getting out while trying to poke the deliveries pitched on the fourth stump line. During the Test, T20Is, and ODIs, he could only score around 100 runs. Currently, he is on a break from the game with the team playing a limited-over series in the Caribbean Islands. The right-hander is reported to return for the ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting on August 18.
The series will consist of three ODIs to be played on August 18, 20, and 22 in Harare. However, nothing is official yet. Recently, when the reports had come out of the 2008 U19 World Cup skipper playing in the series, the fans had trolled him brutally. Nevertheless, he will be looking to get back to form against an extremely weak bowling line-up. Not to forget, Asia Cup will start only a few days after the series (August 27).
Even the team would want him to get back to form in the games against the Southern African side. They wouldn’t want to risk taking an out-of-form legend in the Asian Championship, playing against teams such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
