Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings battled it out at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. PBKS won the toss and chose to bowl first. Faf du Plessis could not field due to the rib injury that he picked up in the previous game, which resulted in Virat Kohli captaining the side in place of Du Plessis.

Kohli and Du Plessis got off RCB to a great start in the innings. Kohli started well but lost his way in the middle overs when Rahul Chahar was introduced, Kohli became uncharacteristically slow and it brought the RCB innings to a halt. Although Faf was going great guns at the other end, but Kohli’s innings put RCB in a shadow of doom. The former RCB skipper made it a lost cause. Du Plessis changed gears and started to take the attack to the PBKS bowlers.

RCB were dominating at one stage and were 91 -0 in 10 overs

Due to Kohli’s slow innings, Maxwell felt the need to accelerate immediately when he got in the middle after Kohli’s wicket. But it did not work as Maxwell fell to Harpreet Brar’s first ball. Du Plessis kept going but he fell to Nathan Elis when he tried to up the ante. The RCB skipper went after playing a stroke-filled knock of 84 off 56 balls with five fours and five sixes.

The PBKS bowlers need to be given credit for holding their nerve and using the slower balls and off-pace deliveries beautifully. The last phase of the innings was a helter-skelter for RCB. They tried to go for the big hits to make for the dot balls and slow pace of the middle overs earlier. This made them falter very badly at the end overs and deprived them of the finish that they would have liked.

Sam Curran was spot on with his captaincy, field placings and bowling changes once again. In the end, RCB somehow huffed and puffed to 174-4 in their 20 overs in what can be called an innings of two halves. It was a great comeback by PBKS and RCB has itself to blame for bottling up such a great start.
