The highly anticipated three-match T20 International series between India and Afghanistan kicks off on January 11th, raising a burning question for selectors: Will veteran powerhouses Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the fold? Their last T20I appearances came in the 2022 World Cup semi-final, leaving their inclusion in this series shrouded in intrigue.

This selection bears immense weight, as it’s India’s final T20 tune-up before the World Cup slated for June in the USA and West Indies. Adding another layer of drama is the injury of current T20I leaders Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. Their absence intensifies the speculation surrounding Kohli and Sharma’s potential comeback.

The upcoming series, therefore, transcends a mere T20 clash. It represents a crucial stepping stone on India’s path to World Cup glory, potentially witnessing the return of seasoned champions or the rise of new heroes. Eyes across the cricketing world will be glued to the squad announcement, eagerly awaiting answers to a question that holds the key to India’s T20 future.

Will veteran powerhouses Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the fold? The answer is likely to emerge soon.

Piyush Chawla backs Rohit, Kohli’s return

During a live segment on Star Sports, 2007 and 2011 World Cup winner, Piyush Chawla was asked about his opinion on the burning question regarding Rohit and Kohli‘s future in the shortest format of the game. He championed their inclusion, claiming their seasoned presence would be gold dust during high-pressure moments. Chawla believes their hunger for a major trophy could galvanize the entire team, making their selection a no-brainer.

“They want to do something special to really win the World Cup. You don’t think like there is baggage or something because once you are on the field, you don’t think about what happened in the past, you are just living that current situation. If you ask me personally, I would say that experience matters in crunch situations,” Chawla said.

It remains to be seen if the selectors have a belief similar to Chawla’s or if they decide to back the youngsters who have represented India in T20s in the recent past.
