India ended Day 1 of the second Test at Trinidad in a good position. The Men in Blue finished the game at 288-4 with Virat Kohli batting on an unbeaten 87 off 161 balls with eight fours.  Ravindra Jadeja ended Day 1 on an unbeaten 36 off 84 balls with four fours. Although it was a great Test match for Rohit Sharma, who made a cracking 80 off 143 balls with nine fours and two sixes at the top and also for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The same could not be said about Ajinkya Rahane.

The India vice-captain hung around for 36 balls but scored just 8. But, he did not look in any kind of rhythm. At the stroke of Tea on Day 1, Rahane was cleaned up by Shannon Gabriel. The ball came back in slightly and Rahane went on the back foot to defend which resulted in an inside edge that hit his stumps. The ball was bowled at pace and Rahane was a little late to react on it which resulted in the dismissal. It has not been a great tour in the West Indies for Rahane so far as he scored just 3 off 11 balls at Dominica. In Trinidad, it was much of the same for him.

Rahane scored 326 runs in Indian Premier League 2023 to earn an India comeback

While Rahane got back into the Indian Test side with great performances in the World Test Championship final where he scored 135 runs in two innings at an average of 67.50. The Mumbaikar made a counter-attacking 89 off 129 balls with 11 fours and one six. In the second innings, he followed it up with a resolute 46 off 108 balls with seven fours. He had a great Indian Premier League (IPL)  in 2023 where he scored 326 runs at a strike rate of 171.48. This meant that he was selected to play in the WTC final.

Rahane also got back his Test berth as a result. But there was a lot of debate on his inclusion. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly found the process of bringing back Rahane into the Test side and making him Test captain puzzling. When Rahane came back to play in the WTC final for India he had a hiatus of almost 15 months from the Indian Test side.
