ODI World Cup 2023: Every record Rohit Sharma broke against the Netherlands

India got off to a superb start against the Netherlands as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shared a 100-run partnership.

Ahead of their final group-stage game of the World Cup, India won the toss and opted to bat first at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium which has traditionally been an absolute paradise for batters. India retained the same playing 11 which took the field against South Africa on November 5.

As has been the case throughout the tournament, India got off to a superb start as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shared a 100-run partnership. Both of them scored quickfire half-centuries to put pressure on the Dutch bowlers. Their dismissals did not give the Netherlands joy for too long as the likes of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer also notched up half-centuries, with the latter still at the crease. Giving Iyer company is the bankable KL Rahul who has also crossed fifty. India is in pole position to end up with a score of 400 or more.

Earlier, Rohit smashed 61 off just 54 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes in what was a highly entertaining innings. He did not allow the opposition’s bowlers to settle down, as he has done throughout the World Cup, producing impactful innings at the top of the order.

Rohit Sharma breaks a plethora of records at the Chinnaswamy

During his innings, Rohit broke several records. He became the first player to score more than 500 runs in two consecutive editions of the World Cup. In 2019, he had scored 648 runs and his tally in this tournament stands at 503 with potentially two more games in hand. He also broke the record for the most sixes by an individual in a calendar year (60), going past AB de Villiers’ tally of 58 sixes in 2015.

Another record that he made his own was the one for the most sixes by a captain in a World Cup. Earlier, it was held by Eoin Morgan who smashed 22 sixes in 2019 but Rohit is now the proud owner of this record, having hit 23 in this edition already. He also broke the record for the most fours in a single edition of the World Cup edition by a captain. Most run as an Indian captain in a single World Cup edition – First Indian captain to score 500 runs in a single World Cup edition – Most sixes in a single venue in ODI. He also became the first Indian captain to score 500 runs in a single edition of the World Cup, which is a significant achievement as there have been some great batters who have led India in World Cups.

Indian fans will genuinely hope that Rohit’s form continues for at least two more games as the quest for World Cup glory has now reached an important phase.
