New Zealand defeated England comfortably in the first ODI of the series. The 180-run stand between Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway helped New Zealand overcome the home side in a one-sided contest in Cardiff. On a good wicket to bat on, England probably did not realize the par score and ended up scoring less than 300 runs in their 50 overs. In the long run, it hurt them badly.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first. The bowlers of New Zealand kept it tight throughout the match and gave hardly any room for the batters to score runs. Matt Henry and Tim Southee did not give much room for the batters of England. Dawid Malan scored fifty. But Harry Brook played a slow knock and did not help England in the progression of the innings.
Lockie Ferguson and Rachin Ravindra were very good in the middle overs. Ferguson troubled the batters with his sheer pace and bounce. Ravindra bowled hard lengths and kept the batters at bay. Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone contributed well to the total with their aggressive batting. Stokes could not get going in his stay in the middle. In their 50 overs, England managed to score 291 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
The players of New Zealand felt that the total was on par. But the way they batted did not seem like the total was enough for England. Devon Conway took his time and played out the tricky phase. Will Young and Henry Nicholls were dismissed in their 20s. What followed it was a show from Daryl Mitchell, who smashed the bowlers for fun all over the park.
While Conway anchored the chase, Mitchell attacked the English spinners. In 91 deliveries, Mitchell scored an unbeaten 118, which included 7 fours and 7 sixes. On the other hand, Conway scored an unbeaten 111 in 121 balls and guided New Zealand to a win over England. Barring Chris Woakes, all the bowlers of England proved to be expensive.
Here’s how the fans reacted to New Zealand’s win –
People are rating NZ too low for this WC, they have got some really good players, have been saying this that Daryl Mitchell is their dark horse.
