New Zealand have announced their 14-man squad for the highly anticipated two-Test series against Australia, kicking off on February 29th in Wellington. While the series holds immense significance for its impact on the World Test Championship standings, the series will be even more special for the Kiwis as two of their greats, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee, are all set to play their 100th Test during the course of the series.

The squad, led by veteran Southee, presents a blend of experience and exciting young talent. The squad bears a very similar look to the one that recently took on South Africa. Kyle Jamieson is the unlucky one to miss out as he has suffered yet another bout of injury. He has been replaced by the experienced Scott Kuggeleijn. On the other hand, William O’Rourke, who picked up nine wickets on his recent debut against the Proteas, has been retained.

Meanwhile, Daryl Mitchell who missed the 2nd game of the South Africa series, returns to the setup. Mitchell was rested in what was an act of precaution. However, head coach, Gary Stead, while announcing the squad, declared that the key batter will be available for the opening game. “Everything is tracking well with Daryl. He will keep focusing on his rehabilitation over the next week and will be fit and ready for the first Test in Wellington,” he said.

Neser back for Aussies

The visitors had also announced their squad for the Trans-Tasman battle recently with Michael Neser being handed a comeback. Neser’s inclusion offers the Aussies additional depth in terms of bowling. Apart from Neser’s return, the squad was on expected lines with good results ensuring that there was no requirement for any changes to what has been a settled unit.

While Australia will undoubtedly pose a strong challenge, New Zealand, with their home advantage and a well-balanced squad, will be looking to secure a crucial series win and make the occasion sweeter for skipper Southee and Williamson.
