Netflix drops the release date of Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra starrer Chamkila

Finally, the release date for the upcoming movie Chamkila on Netflix has been revealed. On Monday, the streaming service shared a short video with Diljit Dosanjh on Instagram. Parineeti Chopra plays the lead role in the movie as well.

Netflix posted the video and said, “Maahaul bann jaata tha jab vo chedta tha saaz, kuch aisa hi tha Chamkila ka Andaaz (banjo emoji) (A crowd would gather when he sang, such was his style). @imtiazaliofficial ’s AmarSinghChamkila arriving on 12 April, only on Netflix!” This is the first on-screen partnership between Diljit and director Imtiaz Ali, with Chamkila.

The film tells the untold true story of Amar Singh Chamkila, the first mass-market rock star from Punjab. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, centres on Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila. Diljit is slated to play Chamkila, while Parineeti Chopra will portray Amarjot. On March 8, 1988, Amar Singh Chamkila, his spouse Amarjot Kaur, and the musicians in their band were all assassinated.

Director Imtiaz Ali had previously stated, as cited by news agency ANI, in reference to the movie, “Making Amar Singh Chamkila about the life of the iconic music star of the masses has been a unique journey for me. Given that this movie includes some live singing, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra are the best actors I could have asked to play the lead roles. The movie is based on Chamkila’s outrageously popular songs, which society was unable to accept or ignore. With Netflix as a partner, I am honoured to share our story with millions of people worldwide, not just in India.”

Diljit Dosanjh stated, “It’s been one of the most difficult experiences of my life to play Amar Singh Chamkila, and I’m excited to be coming back to Netflix with another thrilling story. Working with Parineeti and the whole team that has put in so much effort to make this lovely story come to life has been a pleasure. It was a contemplative experience to be able to sing to Rahman sir’s impeccable compositions, and I hope I was able to honour his vision. I appreciate Imtiaz Bhajee’s belief in me for this position.”
