With Netherlands making it through to the quarter-finals, Australia and Argentina locked horns in the Round of 16 stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 hosted by Qatar. As things stand, it was all about La Albiceleste as they dominated the game right throughout.

To add more to Argentina’s first half, it was all about the legendary player Lionel Messi as he managed to score the lead for his team in the 35th minute, silencing all his critics and haters who claimed that the player was done.

Given that it would be his last appearance in the World Cup, Messi would hope to finish it on a high and he was spotted giving it all for his team and country in the knockout game. On the other hand, the Socceroos looked completely out of the game and struggled to come up with the right targets as they failed to put balls into the 18-yard box. The first half ended with Argentina leading the game with a scoreline of 1-0.

Argentina’s magic in FIFA World Cup 2022

As far as the second half is concerned, Argentina capitalized on the momentum from the first half and eventually took the game away from the Socceroos although neither of the teams scored a goal at the 55-minute mark, barring La Albiceleste’s goal in the first half. It looked like the match and the tournament were almost drawing to an end for the Socceroos unless they pulled off a miracle from there to make it through to the quarter-finals of the world’s biggest sporting event, which looked highly unlikely.

While many opined that it might be the sole goal of the match, Julián Álvarez changed the momentum and doubled the lead for Argentina in the 57th minute, inching them closer to victory in the prestigious tournament. However, much to the stupefaction of the Australian fans, Enzo Fernández scored an own goal and gifted the Australians the much-needed opening goal in the 77th minute. However, after a tiny scare, Argentina managed to hold on to their nerves and won the game with a scoreline of 2-1 and eventually made a cut to the quarter-finals.
