For years, the name Sarfaraz Khan echoed through domestic cricket circles, each thunderous run carrying the weight of unfulfilled potential. Labelled a “run machine,” his talent was undeniable, yet the elusive Test cap remained frustratingly out of reach. Today, on the sun-drenched Rajkot pitch, the wait finally ended.

From the moment he strode onto the field, a quiet determination simmered within Khan. The nervous anticipation of a debutant was masked by a steely resolve. He went on to make a magnificent 62 off just 66 deliveries and was involved in a 77-run stand with centurion, Ravindra Jadeja. His innings, along with those of Rohit Sharma and Jadeja, have helped India get to a respectable score of 326 at the end of Day 1.

His innings weren’t about brute force but about calculated aggression. His strike rate, a pulsating 94, thrummed through the Indian batting order, injecting a much-needed dose of momentum. But it wasn’t just the runs that painted the picture of his brilliance. It was the composure, the audaciousness, the sheer joy exuding from him with every well-timed shot. Each run was a celebration, a nod to his father, Naushad, whose tireless support had fueled his journey. Sarfaraz will now hope that he makes up for lost time and occupies a position in the Test side for a long time.

“Raat ko waqt chahiye…”

The official broadcaster, JioCinema, acknowledged Naushad Khan’s efforts and sacrifices which led to his son’s debut. As such, they invited him to the commentary box for a conversation. During that segment, Aakash Chopra asked him if he had to wait for too long to see his son don the Indian Test cap.

Naushad’s response was poetic. “Raat ko waqt chahiye guzarne ke liye, lekin Suraj meri marzi se nahi nikalne wala,” he said, which translates to “It takes time for the night to end and the sun wouldn”t have turned up at my behest.” His words resonated deeply, reminding everyone that dreams, nurtured with love and resilience, always find their light.
