Matheesha Pathirana weaved his craft over the Mumbai Indians at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. The Sri Lankan speedster unleashed his bag of tricks as the batters did not know what hit them. In a wonderful spell of bowling, he picked up 3-15 in his four overs spell. He produced a magical delivery to get rid of Nehal Vadhera who made 64 off 51 balls with eight fours and one six.

He also dismissed Tristian Stubbs and Arshad Khan who can hit big at the end overs. Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande picked up 2-18 in three overs and 2-26 in four overs respectively. With this victory against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings vaulted to second position on the points table. Pathirana has picked up 10 scalps in 15 games and has been MS Dhoni’s point of difference. After the game. MS Dhoni had some pearls of wisdom to impart to Pathirana and also quietly slipped in a warning.

He will serve Sri Lankan cricket for a long time – MS Dhoni on Matheesha Pathirana

“People who don’t have very clean (conventional) action, batsmen have a difficult time picking it and when trying to go after the bowler. But his consistency, variation, pace makes him special. What’s important is to keep an eye on how much cricket he is playing. I feel he should not play red-ball cricket, not even get close to it. MS Dhoni said. Not to forget, he’s a really young boy. Last time he came, he was very lean but has put on muscle and is stronger. I feel he’ll serve for a long time in Sri Lankan cricket but he’ll have to keep an eye on how much he bowls,”  he added.

Mathesha Pathirana is reminiscent of Lasith Malinga in terms of the slinging action and toe crushing deliveries. Harsha Bhogle had mentioned that MS Dhoni is giving a gift to Sri Lanka by preparing the bowler for the big stage. MS Dhoni has led CSK to four titles in the Indian Premier League. With the form CSK are in, it looks like they are on their way to get their fifth IPL title and be on par with MI.

For MI, the batting was a no-show barring Vadhera. Rohit Sharma got out for a duck trying to play a scoop shot which was not pleasing for his fans. The bowling from MI lacked teeth as they could not breakthrough CSK’s solid batting lineup. CSK have beaten MI both home and away this season.
