During the ODI World Cup last year, former Pakistani cricketer Hasan Raza alleged that the Indian bowlers were given “different” balls during the marquee tournament to aid swing. This outlandish claim was met with widespread criticism by plenty of fans and pundits including Wasim Akram and Aakash Chopra. Akram went so far as to say that nonsensical statements like Raza’s brought shame to Pakistan.

Mohammed Shami, a key figure in India’s bowling attack, had taken to social media to express his disappointment and anger at the time and he also called Raza out on several occasions on live television. Now, Shami in his latest interview with News 18, has slammed Raza once again.

Shami didn’t mince words when responding to a question regarding Raza’s claims. Shami, clearly frustrated by the baseless claims, offered a strong rebuttal, suggesting that such accusations stem from jealousy rather than legitimate concerns. Shami went on to highlight the pitfalls of harbouring jealousy.

“They have made cricket a joke because we don’t enjoy each other’s success. You become too happy when you are being praised, but when you lose, you feel that you have been cheated. You look at the records of the time we have been part of the team, you won’t even find them close. Jalan toh puri dikhti hai wo. Itna jalane se kon se results mil jaane hain (jealousy is evident. You can never get good results with this amount of jealousy),” Shami stated. Shami’s response resonated with many fans and fellow cricketers, who praised his firm stance against unsubstantiated allegations.

Shami to remain sidelined for now!

Shami had a stupendous run in the World Cup but hasn’t featured in a game post the tournament as he has been out of action due to an ankle injury. It is understood that the Indian Cricket Board has sent him abroad for treatment. As such, it is highly unlikely that he will feature in any of the three remaining Tests between India and England. It is almost certain that he will return to competitive action during the cash-rich Indian Premier League.
