20-20 World Cup defending champions Australia were handed a crushing 89-run defeat to New Zealand in their first game in the 2022 edition. The Kiwis were led by Finn Allen, who played a scintillating 42 off just 16 balls, and Devon Conway, who was the glue in the New Zealand innings, played a match-winning knock of 92 off just 58 balls to get their team to a huge score of 200 on the board in their 20 overs.

The Kiwi bowlers put on a clinical performance with the ball to bundle out Australia for just 111 in 17.1 overs. Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner were the wreckers in chief with the ball as they picked up 3 wickets each from their respective spells. The loss also dented the net run rate of the Kangaroos in a big way.

Australia will now face Sri Lanka in their next encounter today. Speaking ahead of the encounter, Mitchell Marsh said that they will go with the same playing XI despite having amazing backup options that include Steve Smith and Cameron Green.

We have full faith in our pace battery – Mitchell Marsh

“To my knowledge, we’ll be playing the same 11 (and) hopefully stay the course,” Western Australian Marsh told reporters in Perth. “The nature of the tournament, you lose one game, your back is up against the wall, and we know what’s in front of us now. “I think what’s important for us is to not look too far ahead. We’ve got Sri Lanka tomorrow night. That’s all that matters for us.”

Marsh further said that they will back their pace battery of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc to deliver any day and that they are not pushing the panic button at the moment. Australia will hope to bounce back and get back on the road for their 20-20 World Cup title defence.

Sri Lanka will face Australia today and they are coming on the back of a comprehensive win over Ireland in their first game of the 20-20 World Cup.
