FIFA World Cup 2022 started off with a banger as Ecuador defeated the hosts Qatar by 2-0 in the curtain-raiser event. While India is accredited to be a cricket-crazy country, there is a huge number of football fans as well.
These football fans despite India not qualifying for the FIFA World Cup followed the mega event with great passion. Many were hoping to watch the footballing extravaganza and enjoy a great couple of weeks of the high-quality game. The reality however wasn’t as fans had hoped for.
As soon as football fans tuned into watch the curtain raiser event between Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday, they were subjected to lagging and bad streaming that ruined all of the country’s hopes for a good time.
Jio Cinema was the culprit of fans’ anger as the service failed to provide a watchable experience to millions on Sunday. The feed lagged and crashed all throughout the entirety of the game ruining the match for all football fans in India.
Soon memes are angry reactions started to surface on social media about JioCinema’s lacklustre FIFA World Cup broadcast.
Many fans also felt cheated as Voot was earlier announced to be the official broadcaster of FIFA in India but later left it for JioCinema. Many fans however had already bought a subscription for Voot and were frustrated after not finding a World Cup streaming link on Voot ahead of the curtain-raiser event.
Following criticism from thousands of fans, Jio Cinema vowed to rectify the issue. Many fans hoped the issue to be gone on the second day of the FIFA World Cup when they tuned in for England vs Iran. All hopes soon came crashing down like Jio Cinema’s servers as the issue of buffering and the blackout was even worse.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Wow #JioCinema you guys should have tested your servers before putting in your bid for broadcasting #FIFAWorldCup in India. Pathetic service.

Rs 600 for a #Voot subscription, only for the service to de-list the tournament after showing its listings for months.
Meanwhile, #JioCinema has the most horrible live telecast experience ever.Am I the only one who feels cheated?#FIFAWorldCup #QatarWorldCup2022 #WorldCup

Dear Ambani,
I could not watch the first game of the world cup because of Jio cinema.
And that hurts me.
So this morning, I decided to watch the highlights of the game and guess what, that buffers too.If you can't fix this, sell the rights to sony sports.#JioCinema

I watched FIFA on an illegal stream which had about 700k people watching in 4K UHD. Didn't even buffer once. This guy's server might be in his mom's basement and yet faster than a billion dollar company #Jiodown #JioCinema
