As India gear up to face the West Indies in a two-match Test series, there are still questions doing the rounds in Indian cricket with regard to Indian captaincy. Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli across all formats after the 2021 T20 World Cup debacle. Under Rohit, India won a Test series at home against Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that was held in March. But the Men in Blue lost the World Test Championship (WTC) final under him.

Speaking on Indian captaincy, former India selector MSK Prasad said that Kohli should be given the Test captaincy if an opportunity arises. “I don’t know if I can answer this question. I don’t know the mindset of the selectors. Usually, the mindset of the selectors should be now with the WTC cycle it should be a clear cycle, that’s how the mindset should be,” Prasad was quoted as saying by Khel Now.

I don’t know whether selectors are thinking beyond Rohit: MSK Prasad

Indian cricket is also at a transition phase as the team management has to find and groom a younger captain in place of Rohit Sharma. Rohit is 36 years old and he is not going to get any younger. “Why not Virat Kohli? When Ajinkya Rahane can come back and become the vice-captain, then why not Virat Kohli? I don’t know what the mindset of Virat is on captaincy. In case selectors are thinking beyond Rohit, I don’t know whether they are thinking but if they are thinking beyond Rohit, then I think Virat can also be an option”. Prasad added.

The next biggest task for Indian cricket would be a home ODI World Cup in 2023. The Men in Blue have not won a World event since 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. India is hosting the World Cup on home soil for the first time since 2011. Rohit will want to make a statement and bring home the cup in front of loyal home fans who have been waiting for World Cup glory once again since 2011.
