India will start of their new World Test Championship cycle with a two Test match series in the West Indies. Ahead of the series two notable changes made headlines on social media. One was the ouster of Cheteshwar Pujara from the Test team. The other change was the reappointment of Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Indian Test side. Speaking more on the matter Sourav Ganguly the former Indian Cricket Board president said that he did not understand the thought process behind it as Rahane was out of the Test side for 18 months.

Rahane though on the other hand proved that he was not standing on his last legs in Test cricket. The Mumbaikar stunned one and all with his electrifying performance at the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The right-hander made 89 off 129 balls with 11 fours and one six. He put on a great partnership with Shardul Thakur when India were in trouble at one point.  In the second innings as well, he showed great application as he made 46 off 108 balls with seven fours.

Selection’s should not be hot and cold, there should be consistency -Sourav Ganguly

“I won’t say it’s a step backward. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don’t understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate,” Ganguly said.  My only thing is that the selection shouldn’t be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection,” he added, highlighting his opinion.

Ganguly however, was all praise for Rahane as he spoke about Rahane as a person. “How good it is, after 18 months. He was away for 18 months from Test cricket, Many of them had written him off and probably he himself. It is not easy in Indian cricket as a batter to come back and make a statement. I think it is tremendous. There have been many comebacks in the past but not after such a long period,” The former India skipper said.
