South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has signed a deal with Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Fortune Barishal, the team announced today. Maharaj is scheduled to arrive in Chattogram on February 13th, just in time to play their match against Sylhet Sunrisers the following day. This will mark Maharaj’s first appearance in the BPL.
Maharaj is a highly regarded spinner, known for his accuracy and control. He has been a key member of the South African Test team for several years, taking over 150 wickets in the longest format. He has also enjoyed success in white-ball cricket, amassing 79 wickets in ODIs and T20Is combined.
Barishal’s bowling attack has lacked an accurate spinner this season, and Maharaj’s signing is a major boost for their title aspirations. The team currently sits in fourth place on the points table, with three wins and two losses in their first five matches.
Yesterday, the Keshav Maharaj-led Durban Supergiants fell agonisingly short of the SA20 title as they lost the Final to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Still, their campaign deserves rich applause. While SEC ultimately reigned supreme, the Supergiants’ journey has been one of grit, determination, and exciting cricket.
From the outset, the Supergiants emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Under Maharaj’s astute captaincy, they consistently displayed their prowess, topping the league stage and showcasing their all-round strength. Heinrich Klaasen‘s explosive batting, Wiaan Mulder’s consistency, and the bowling prowess of Junior Dala and Dwaine Pretorius were just some of the highlights.
While the final saw them falling short by 89 runs, it shouldn’t overshadow the brilliance they displayed throughout the tournament. Reaching the final itself is a testament to their talent and fighting spirit. They were one of the most entertaining teams to watch, showcasing attacking cricket and never giving up till the last ball.
