‘Teen din ka final chala bhai’ – CSK fans can’t keep calm as they beat GT in IPL 2023 final to bag their fifth title

Gujarat Titans (GT) vs. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was the last match of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The game that was initially scheduled for Sunday, May 28, had to be changed to Monday, May 29, the reserve day, because of the persistent rain in Ahmedabad. GT wants to become the third side to win the IPL in a row, while CSK is going for a record-tying fifth title.

In his 250th IPL game and 10th final as captain of CSK, MS Dhoni decided to bowl first on a field that has historically favoured batting. The Gujarat Titans eagerly accepted the invitation to bat first, and they ended their 20 overs with 214/4.

Shubman Gill was denied the opportunity to surpass 900 IPL runs in a single season as the youngster got out for 39 off 20 balls after Ravindra Jadeja’s flighted deliveries was misjudged by Gill for Dhoni to collect and do the rest. Wriddhiman Saha batted well for his 54 off 39 and skipper Hardik Pandya contributed well towards the end with 21 off just 12.

Sai Sudharshan’s 96 off 47 went in vain

But, the star for GT remained the young Chennai batter, Sai Sudharshan who smashed 96 off 47 balls with the help of eight boundaries and six maximums. Matheesha Pathirana returned with two wickets for CSK after giving up 44 runs in his four overs. In the season finale, Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja both scalped one wicket each.

With rain interrupting play, CSK were given a revised target of 171 in 15 overs. The opening pair of Devon Conway (47 off 25) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (26 off 16) gave Chennai a solid start with a 74-run stand. Ajinkya Rahane (27 off 13) and Ambati Rayudu (19 off 8) played much-needed quickfire knocks taking the team closer to the target. With 13 runs needed off the last over, Shivam Dube (32 off 21) and Ravindra Jadeja (15 off 6) took the team home in the final ball. For GT, Mohit Sharma remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of — in three overs, he was followed by Noor Ahmed who dropped an economical spell of 2/17 in his three overs.
