The UP Warriorz produced a clinical performance to outclass the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, in a one-sided contest at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru tonight in the Women’s Premier League. The Warriorz secured a convincing seven-wicket victory, marking a significant turnaround after their initial hiccups in the tournament.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians got off to a promising start with openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews contributing valuable runs. However, the absence of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur due to a niggle and the failure of multiple batters to convert starts meant that MI scored lesser than they really should have.

The UP Warriorz, in response, got off to a great start as openers Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire shared a magnificent stand worth 94 runs. Navgire went on to smash a terrific 57 off just 31 deliveries with the help of 6 boundaries and 4 sixes. Her dominant knock completely shifted the momentum in favour of the Warriors, leaving the Mumbai Indians bowlers with very little to defend. The middle-order duo of Grace Harris (38) and Deepti Sharma (27) took the initiative to ensure that there were no hiccups in the chase, ensuring that the Warriorz eclipsed the target with almost four overs to spare.

“Sophie is excited about the cake” – Skipper Alyssa Healy after the win

While the Mumbai Indians will be disappointed with the loss, especially after their strong start to the tournament, they will need to regroup quickly and address their batting inconsistencies. UP, on the other hand, will be delighted to have gotten off the mark after having lost two back-to-back games.

Skipper Healy acknowledged that the victory calls for some celebration in the camp. “We will celebrate with cake. That’s how we do it in India. Sophie Ecclestone is really excited about the cake. Proud of the girls they came back hard, good to get on the board but still a lot of work to do,” she said while speaking to the official broadcaster, JioCinema.
