Having lost the toss and been put in to bat by Sri Lanka, India notched up a massive total of 357 in their 50 overs. The protagonists of the first innings were Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer who all stroked sublime half-centuries before narrowly missing out on their respective tons.

India’s innings began inauspiciously, with captain Rohit Sharma dismissed off the second delivery of the match by a brilliant delivery from the young Dilshan Madushanka. Rohit was castled as he played for the inswinger but the ball went in the opposite direction. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then forged a masterful 189-run partnership, dazzling spectators with their exquisite strokeplay.

Both batsmen were poised for centuries before being sent back to the pavilion against the run of play, Madushanka the bowler on both occasions. The two quick wickets brought a hush to the otherwise pumped-up Wankhede crowd.

India surpassed the 350-run mark despite Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill missing centuries

Before the match, there was some debate about Iyer’s place in the team, but the elegant batter silenced all critics with a dazzling 56-ball 82 at his home ground. Ravindra Jadeja made a vital 35-run contribution, helping India surpass the 350-run mark. Sri Lanka’s bowlers toiled in the sweltering heat, unable to contain the Indian batters.

Madushanka’s performance was a positive for Sri Lanka, as he bagged a five-wicket haul, dismissing all of India’s key batsmen. However, he also conceded 80 runs, joining the ignominious list of the most expensive five-wicket hauls in ODIs.

Sri Lanka’s already difficult chase was compounded by the early loss of four wickets. Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama have all been sent back to the dugout and it looks like Sri Lanka is in for a massive defeat at the Wankhede Stadium. t remains to be seen whether Sri Lanka can put up a fight.
