The 28th Match in the Big Bash League 2022-23 between Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers was marred in controversy as wrist spinner Adam Zampa tried to attempt a non-striker’s run out in the final over of the first innings.

The incident took place after the fourth ball of the over, as Zampa ran in to bowl the fifth ball non-striker Tom Rogers ventured out of his crease to take advantage. Seeing Rogers out of the crease, Zampa stopped in the middle of the action and dislodged the bails.

The on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire. Rogers was ultimately adjudged not out as Zampa’s arm had passed its highest point where he would reasonably be expected to release the ball.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground full of around 40,000 people began booing the Melbourne Stars captain. However, Stars’ coach David Hussey said that the team would’ve withdrawn the appeal had Rogers been given out.

“It’s not the right way to play cricket – yet. It was more of a warning for the batter not to leave too early,” Hussey told the official broadcaster Fox.

After the match ended, Zampa reacted to the dismissal and told reporters he had no regrets. “I’m a very competitive guy. I saw red a little bit when he used that to his advantage. If I get in that situation again, I’m not saying I won’t do it … I was well within my rights. It’s in the rule book. I just got my technique wrong,” he said.

In reply to the Renegades’ total, the Stars got off to a miserable start as they lost four wickets for just 18 runs. Nick Larkin played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 48 off 40 balls but didn’t get any support from the rest of the batters. As a result, the Renegades won the match by 33 runs. Tom Rogers was the pick of the bowlers for the Renegades who picked up 5/16 in four overs. He was awarded ‘Player of the match’ for his dream spell.
