The Indian cricket board announced the team for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies later this July on Wednesday. The senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant were once again rested for the series as they will be playing in the T20 and ODI series against England after the rescheduled Test.

After the squad announcement, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan took to Twitter and wrote “No one comes back to form while resting…”, signalling the omission of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the squad.

Both Kohli and Rohit were rested for the 5-match-T20I series against South Africa following the Indian T20 League. Both were supposed to make a comeback to the team in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston. But Rohit missed the Test after he tested positive for Covid 19 just before the game.

The duo will finally return to action in the limited-overs series against England with Rohit set to lead the team in the first T20 international while Kohli will return to the T20 team from the second T20 international along with other senior players.

With the 20-20 world cup less than 4 months away, fans believe that it’s not good for the senior players to sit out and rest. They should instead be playing as much as possible to regain their form before the ‘marquee tournament’ this year.

Meanwhile, in the absence of the senior players, Shikhar Dhawan has been named the captain of the squad, with Ravindra Jadeja being assigned the role of the vice-captain. The three ODIs will be played on the 22nd, 24th and 27th of July at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Team India squad for ODI series against West Indies:

Shikhar Dhawan (C), Ravindra Jadeja (VC), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Arshdeep Singh
