For 16 years, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have chased the IPL trophy with a fervent fanbase at their back and a galaxy of stars in their ranks. Yet, the elusive silverware has remained just out of reach. In 2024, they embark on their 17th campaign, their hunger for glory undimmed, their resolve hardened by past battles.

Ahead of the auction, RCB sent shockwaves through the cricketing world as they released a few players who had done well for them in the recent past. Familiar faces like Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga departed, leaving fans and pundits scratching their heads. But this isn’t new territory for the Bangalore franchise. They’ve always marched to the beat of their own drum. They made some interesting additions to their line-up in the auction to bolster their side.

RCB Final Squad for IPL 2024:

Faf du Plessis (C), Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Anuj Rawat, Dinesh Karthik, Suyash Prabhudessai, Will Jacks, Mahipal Lomror, Karn Sharma, Manoj Bhandage, Mayank Dagar, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Himanshu Sharma, Rajan Kumar, Cameron Green, Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal, Tom Curran, Lockie Ferguson, Swapnil Singh, Saurav Chauhan.

Whether RCB has found the alchemy for success remains to be seen. The road to the IPL trophy is long and arduous, paved with formidable opponents and unpredictable twists. On that note, here’s a SWOT analysis of the side which will give you a better understanding of where RCB stands.

Strengths

Batting. As has been the case for the major chunk of their history. RCB’s batting lineup is simply outstanding, arguably the most potent among the ten teams. Their experienced top-order features Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, fresh off a stunning season together. This dynamic duo can be expected to lay a solid foundation for the middle order. 2022’s breakout star, Rajat Patidar, returns fully fit and eager to translate his domestic brilliance onto the grand stage of the IPL. Following them is a formidable trio: the explosive Glenn Maxwell, the versatile Cameron Green, and the experienced Dinesh Karthik. This explosive mix has the potential to send shivers down any bowling attack’s spine.

Weaknesses

Bowling. Again, as has been the case for the major chunk of their history. RCB’s batting firepower might blaze like wildfire, but lurking beneath the surface are cracks in their bowling armour. RCB’s spin options are Karn Sharma, Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Dagar and Swapnil Singh. They have probably the thinnest spin lineup in the tournament and this will bother them in the IPL. This quartet, while promising, inspires whispers of concern rather than cheers of confidence.

Pace worries follow close behind. The Indian contingent – Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal, Akashdeep Singh, and Vijaykumar Vyshak – lack the intimidation factor. They’ve shown a penchant for leaking runs, putting a question mark on the logic and strategy they deployed for the auction. Siraj’s form becomes a defining factor – if he fires, RCB might just cling on, but his falter could spell doom. The foreign pace quartet – Alzarri Joseph, Reece Topley, Lockie Ferguson, and Tom Curran – are skilful but consistency remains a question mark. With only one likely to grace the field, it’s surprising that the franchise bought all of them.

RCB’s bowling needs to rise to the occasion, shed its skin of fragility, and become a force to be reckoned with. Otherwise, their star-studded batting might find itself in a thrilling yet futile solo act.

Opportunities

With bowling resources thin, the onus falls on Mohammed Siraj to spearhead the attack, transform pressure into performance, and become the hero RCB desperately needs. For the rest of the Indian bowlers, it’s an underdog’s tale. They lack the star power, but not the heart. This season demands grit, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of proving their mettle. This season will also provide Cameron Green with an opportunity to enjoy his batting at the batting paradise that is the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and make an impact for RCB.

Threats

Their home stadium, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Unfortunately for them, they are unlikely to get too much of a home advantage due to the conditions that the Chinnaswamy offers. While the home crowd’s roar is an undeniable advantage, the unique conditions pose a significant challenge. The Chinnaswamy’s small boundaries are a batsman’s dream, but they can turn into a nightmare for bowlers. Runs flow freely, putting immense pressure on RCB’s already thin bowling attack.

Navigating this home paradox will be RCB’s biggest test. They need to devise a tactical masterclass, a bowling strategy that thrives on deception and adaptability. Failure to adapt could prove costly. Chinnaswamy remains a crucial factor in RCB’s journey, a challenge to conquer rather than a comfort zone to rely on. It’s a test of their tactical acumen, their bowling resilience, and their ability to turn a potential foe into a formidable ally.
