IPL 2024: Punjab Kings clear confusion over purchase of Shashank Singh

Punjab Kings statement clears the air

Punjab Kings were active during the bidding process of the IPL 2024 Auction. Indian pacer Harshal Patel was their biggest buy for INR 11.75 Crores on Tuesday. During the Auction, there was a minor confusion over the purchase of Mumbai all-rounder Shashank Singh.

The franchise has now come out and clarified the entire situation after a brief statement was released on Wednesday. It seems like the Shikhar Dhawan-led side is pretty happy with the business conducted.

Interestingly last year Sam Curran became the costliest player in the history of the IPL. The Punjabi side had paid over INR 18 Crores in a bid to land the young Englishman. This year the record was broken twice with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc raking in the big bucks.

Punjab Kings clear the air after IPL Auction confusion –

Shashank Singh was brought for INR 20 Lakhs during the IPL Auction 2024 by Punjab Kings on Tuesday. Once the bidding ended there was instant confusion as the franchise said they had wanted another player. Since the player was sold the decision couldn’t be reversed and this created an awkward situation.

On Wednesday the franchise released a statement on Twitter which read “Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success,”

Harshal Patel became the latest Punjab Kings player on Tuesday joining the team for INR 11.75 Crores. South African batter Rilee Rossouw was brought for INR 8 Crores. The left-handed batter was purchased during the dying moments of the IPL 2024 Auction.

English bowler Chris Woakes who missed the IPL 2023 season is back in Punjab Kings colors for INR 4.8 Crores. Last year Punjab Kings played decent cricket but failed to qualify for the play-offs yet again. Along with Delhi and Bangalore, PBKS is the third original side not to win the IPL.

The closest they came to getting a title was in 2014 when they had reached the final. George Bailey had captained the side well which also boasted of names like Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Johnson. Former Indian wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha had scored a century in the final. Kolkata Knight Riders though kept their nerves and won the game in the final ball to land their 2nd IPL title.
