Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was recently appointed as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. This was a significant development for the franchise, as Gambhir has a storied history with the franchise, having ked them to two IPL wins in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir’s appointment as mentor is a sign of KKR’s intent to win the IPL trophy once again. The franchise has not won the IPL since 2014, and they will be hoping that Gambhir’s experience and expertise can help them end their drought.
Gambhir‘s first assignment after the appointment was the IPL Auction which was held on Tuesday, November 19. KKR didn’t have a great run in the previous season and thus, it was imperative for them to create a balanced squad capable of lifting the coveted trophy once again. Thankfully for them, they had a pretty good auction as they managed to procure the services of a few world class cricketers.
KKR and Gambhir went on to create history as they signed Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc for a monumental figure of 24.75 Crores, making him the most expensive player in the history of the cash-rich tournament. KKR badly wanted Starc, as evident from the price tag that he fetched and the smile that came up on Gautam Gambhir’s face when the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar‘s gavel made contact with the table.

In the clip, Sapru playfully approaches Gambhir, seated in a room, and with a smile pleads, “Prabhu, 2-3 crore dedo!” This playful jab seemingly references Gambhir’s recent acquisition of Mitchell Starc in the IPL auction, prompting laughter from those present. The video showcases a glimpse of the camaraderie and humor shared within the cricketing community.
Coming back to the Gambhir and his acquisition of Starc, it is out there for everyone to see that the World-cup winner has returned to KKR with a fire in his belly and considering his leadership credentials, it should not come as a surprise if his insights take KKR to newer heights.
