Gujarat had a great start to their campaign in the Indian T20 League 2023 as they beat Chennai by 5 wickets. The franchise will have to contend with not having Kane Williamson for the rest of the league. The New Zealand cricketer picked up a knee injury when he landed badly trying to save a six hit by Ruturaj Gaikwad. He saved the six but landed on his knee and had to be helped off the field.
Now, pictures of Williamson in crutches have been doing the rounds on social media. The video is not a good sight. It is very disheartening to see him in this condition. In the video, the Kiwi cricketer makes a long walk with crutches into the airport. Williamson was brought by Gujarat in the auction. He went to the Hardik Pandya-led side at his base price of 2 crores INR. He was brought in to do the anchor role for the franchise.
Here is the video:
Painful to see Kane Williamson in this situation!
Wishing him a speedy recovery. pic.twitter.com/cngFRlQiyg

The right-hander will be a big miss for the franchise for the remainder of the season. Williamson’s future hangs in the balance. It remains to be seen whether he would be fit in time for the ODI World Cup in India. The 32-year-old has been an integral part of the New Zealand side. In ODIs, he scored 6554 runs at an average of 47.83 and a strike rate of 80.97. He has scored 13 hundred and 42 fifties in ODIs. He led New Zealand to the World Cup final in 2019. The Kiwis, unfortunately, lost the summit clash to England at Lord’s on boundary count.
Gujarat, however, had a good game as they beat Chennai at Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill was the top scorer for Gujarat. The right-hander was in sublime touch as he crafted an unbeaten 63 off 36 balls with six fours and three sixes. The Hardik Pandya-led side also received some other vital contributions. Sai Sudharsan made 22 off 17 balls with three fours. Vijay Shankar chipped in with a vital 27 off 21 balls with two fours and one six.
The finishing touches were nicely put in by Rahul Tewatia andΒ Rashid Khan. The duo were as cool as ice in a high-pressure run chase. Tewatia had bailed out Gujarat in high-pressure run chases in the 2022 Indian T20 League as well as Gujarat won the Indian T20 League in 2022. The left-hander was at it again.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:
loved how they did not bombard him with questions and also left him at the right moment.

Acrobatic dives are overrated. No point in risking careers over saving 2 runs or a catch.

Shouldn't have happened. Cannot afford to loose New Zealand captain in the ODI World Cup year for some regular IPL match.
