In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Australia was a dominant team in cricket. It was nearly impossible to beat Australia in cricket for any team. There were at least 8 great players in the Australian team during the period and played extremely well in any game. Sourav Ganguly was one of the captains who had managed to beat the great Australian team in a series.

Under the leadership of Ganguly, India won the Border Gavaskar Trophy in India in 2001 and drew the series in 2003/04 in Australia. But in the ODI World Cup in 2003, India lost both matches against Australia. Ganguly knew how great a side Australia was in the early 2000s. The former Indian captain compared the current Australian team with that of the Australian team in 2003.

‘It is not the same as in 2003′ – Sourav Ganguly

“Australia is a very good side, but they are certainly not the same Australia of 2003. India has done well against Australia in big tournaments, India beat Australia in the 2019 World Cup for example and has the side to do well against Australia. While this Australian team is very good, it is not the same as in 2003,” said Ganguly, and felt that it was not impossible to beat Australia.

Further, Ganguly said that India is one of the favourites for the 2023 ODI World Cup, given it will be played in home conditions. “India will always be a favourite on home soil. They have a very good side and if the fitness of the players is on track, they will always have a very good chance in home conditions. It will depend on how they play during the tournament and how the fast bowlers perform,” added Ganguly.

The 2023 ODI World Cup will begin with a rematch of the 2019 ODI World Cup final. India will face Australia in MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on the 8th of October, which promises to be a cracking contest. In recent years, the rivalry between India and Australia has grown to newer heights.
