Sanju Samson being omitted from the 20-20 World Cup squad was the burning question among the Indian fans, who were puzzled as to why he was not a part of the 15-member contingent. The wicket-keeper batter has got a limited number of chances in international cricket for India so far but has proved that he has got the goods to perform at the international level. He has made full use by scoring runs in the limited opportunities given to him.
Sanju Samson is totally unfazed about not getting a chance to represent the Indian Team in a big tournament like the 20-20 World Cup and said that the Indian team has such a competitive atmosphere that it’s extremely difficult to find a place in the squad.
Samson performed well in the bilateral series against West Indies and also had a good Indian T20 League in 2022 where he led the Rajasthan side to the 2022 Indian T20 League final. He had scored 458 runs in 17 matches at an average of 28.62 and at a strike rate of 146.79 but still could not find a place in the Indian side for the marquee event.
“It really does get challenging. Finding a place in the Indian team is really challenging. There is a lot of competition around, even within players who are in the team now. When these things happen, it is important to focus on myself. I am happy with the way I am performing. I want to improve…,” Samson said.
“Playing different roles is something I have worked on for a lot of years. I am confident of batting anywhere in the order. You should not fix a spot for yourself. You cannot tell people: ‘I am an opener or I am a finisher’. In the last three-four years, playing in various roles and spots (in order) has added a new dimension to my game,” Samson added.
He further talked about the importance of the India A games and leading the side.
“They (India A games) are really important. There is not much difference between an A game and international game. The competition is almost the same. So, it is important to make use of the opportunities,” Samson concluded.
