New Zealand’s veteran star, Kane Williamson has stepped down from the captaincy in Test cricket. The 32-year-old will no longer lead the side in the longest format of the game but will continue to play across formats.
Fast bowler, Tim Southee has been appointed as the new captain of New Zealand’s Test team. He will be the 31st Test captain in the history of New Zealand cricket. Meanwhile, Kane Williamson will continue to lead the team in the other two formats.
Williamson took over from Brendon McCullum in 2016 and led the team in 40 Tests. Under his leadership, the Blackcaps won 22 Tests, lost 10, and drew 8 games. During his tenure as Test captain, he notched 11 hundreds for the Blackcaps and averaged 57 with the bat.
“I’m excited to support Tim as captain and Tom [Latham] as vice-captain,” Williamson said.
“Having played with both of them for most of my career, I’m confident they’ll do a great job. Playing for the BLACKCAPS and contributing in all three formats is my number one priority and I’m looking forward to the cricket we have ahead.”
Kane Williamson led the side win the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship after beating India in the final last year. He now hands over the leadership duties to Tim Southee, who will be leading the Test team for the first time in the upcoming Test match in Karachi on 26th December 2022.
Southee has, previously, led New Zealand in 22 T20Is and 1 ODI game.
The fans, meanwhile, have reacted differently to the recent development. A lot of them thought that it wasn’t a wise decision from Williamson as it would be better if he had given up the captain from the shortest format. Some of the fans urged Rohit Sharma to take the same route and give up captaincy in Test Cricket.
Here’s a look at the reactions:
