After India won the T20I series against New Zealand by 1-0, the action shifted to ODI cricket as both teams locked horns in the first ODI on Friday. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and invited India to bat first. The India openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubhman Gill gave a solid start adding a 124-run partnership for the first wicket.

After the century stand, both openers were dismissed in quick succession. After the opening stand, India lost wickets in quick succession and were four down on 160 after four down as Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav back to the pavilion cheaply. Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a 94-run-stand but the Men in Blue didn’t look like crossing 300. However, Washington Sundar’s blistering knock towards the end helped India breach the 300-run mark.

Shreyas Iyer emerged as the highest run scorer of the innings with his knock of 80 off 76 while Dhawan scored 72 off 77. Tim Southee and Mitchell Santer picked up three wickets each for the kiwis.

In reply to India’s total New Zealand lost their first wicket in the form of the opener Fin Allen who departed after scoring 22 off 25 balls losing his wicket to Shardul Thakur. New Zealand further lost their second wicket in the form of Devon Conway who failed to convert his start giving Umran Malik his first ODI wicket on his debut. The speedster further added another wicket to his tally as he dismissed Daryl Mitchell.

Tom Latham and Kane Williamson take New Zealand home

New Zealand were reeling at 88/3 when Tom Latham joined captain Kane Williamson at the crease. The duo took their time early on to get settled at the crease.  After setting his eye in, Latham began taking on the Indian bowling as Williamson played second fiddle to him.

The Indian bowlers looked helpless against the star batters as they failed to break their threatening partnership. Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan kept rotating his bowlers in search of a wicket but couldn’t be successful in picking wickets.

The partnership eventually took the game away from India as Tom Latham scored a brilliant hundred and Williamson remained unbeaten on 94. The duo were involved in an unbeaten stand of 221 runs off just 162 balls. New Zealand ended up chasing down the target of 307 with 17 balls to spare. Latham scored a magnificent 145 off 104 balls and was also awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for his stupendous knock. With this win, New Zealand went 1-0 up in the three-match series.
