The cricketing fraternity is celebrating the birthday of former Indian opener Virender Sehwag today, who turned 44. The former Indian cricketer was one of the most feared opening batters of his era. Sehwag was the worst nightmare of the opposition bowlers, who would play in the same manner irrespective of the format he was playing.

The 44-year-old was the first Indian batter to score a triple hundred in Test Cricket. Sehwag achieved the feat in 2004 against Pakistan at Multan. He went on to score another triple hundred against South Africa in Chennai. He was dismissed for 319, which is his highest Test score, and also the highest individual score by an Indian batter in Tests. He’s among the four batters in the history of cricket to have two triple-hundreds to their name.

He came pretty close to scoring his third but fell just seven runs short as he was dismissed on 293 against Sri Lanka at Brabourne stadium.

The prolific opener made his international debut against Pakistan in an ODI in 1999 at Mohali. He further made his Test Debut against South Africa at Bloemfontein. He made a hundred on his Test debut coming in to bat at no 6 and became the 11th Indian player to do so.

The Delhi batter also has the highest number of sixes by an Indian in Tests Cricket. He has sent the ball into the stands 91 times in the format. Apart from his heroics in Test cricket, the opener also scored only the second double hundred in men’s ODI cricket, scoring 219 against West Indies in 2011. It is also the highest score ever by a captain in ODI cricket.

The former Indian captain also has the unique feat of opening both batting and bowling in both the Test and ODI formats of the game. He was part of India’s successful 2007 20-20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup campaigns. As the Indian legend turned 44, Twitter poured their hearts out while wishing the former Indian cricketer.
