Dinesh Karthik has had a 20-20 World Cup to forget so far. Primed as a man who can finish games with the bat for India, he hasn’t looked at his best in the tournament. He came in at number 6 against Pakistan when he was stumped off Mohammad Nawaz with India needing 2 runs off 2 balls.

Karthik did not bat in the game against the Netherlands and against South Africa, he was not able to adjust to the bounce at the Optus stadium, which was one of the fastest pitches to play on. He was all at sea and perished trying to play the short ball off Wayne Parnell for just 6 off 15 balls.

Karthik was labelled as India’s finisher before the 20-20 World Cup after he put in a string of good performances to earn a recall in the Indian team. He scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33 and an average of 55 in the Indian T20 League 2022 for the Bangalore franchise.

Things went from bad to worse for Karthik in the game against the Proteas as he walked away from the field holding his back. He was seen writhing in pain and was on his knees. Immediate attention was given to Karthik and it remains to be seen what the actual injury is. It looked like back spasms which could have arisen due to the cold conditions in Perth.

He has some back issue-  Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Dinesh Karthik

“I know he had some back issue. Obviously, the physio will give a report and we will have more clarity after that,” Bhuvneshwar said during the post-match media conference. According to reports, he is doubtful for India’s next match against Bangladesh.

India have had a good start to the 20-20 World Cup 2022 so far. They beat arch- rivals Pakistan in their opening game by 4 wickets and then put the Netherlands to the sword by beating them by 56 runs. The Men in Blue lost their first game against South Africa by 5 wickets in a low-scoring thriller at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

The next encounter for India against Bangladesh becomes a vital one as they need to put out their best XI on the park and get the two points against the Bangla Tigers. The game against Zimbabwe after that at the Melbourne Cricket Ground could be another rain affected encounter and, thus, India would look to put their best foot forward against Bangladesh.

The fan’s haven’t been too pleased with Dinesh Karthik’s performance in the tournament. Here’s a look at some of the notable reactions:
