It was another bad day at the office for the Gujarat Giants as they lost yet another game in the Women’s Premier League, making it three losses in a row. This time around, it was the UP Warriorz who pumped Gujarat.

Alyssa Healy, the captain of UP Warriorz won the coin toss and elected to bowl first. Her decision was justified as the bowlers did a remarkable job, restricting Gujarat to just 142 in their 20 overs. Quite a few of Gujarat’s batters got starts but they failed to convert them into substantial knocks. Some of them had an extremely timid and conservative approach which didn’t help matters. Things would have been worse for the team if Phoebe Litchfield (35 off 26) and Ashleigh Gardner (30 off 17) didn’t perform. UP Warriorz’s bowlers bowled extremely tight lengths and lines and were quite miserly. Sophie Ecclestone was the trump card as she picked up a three-wicket haul whilst conceding just 20 runs.

Warriorz’s chase began extremely well thanks to their skipper, Healy who smashed 33 off just 21 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries. Grace Harris, the powerful Australian then played an innings that commanded a high level of respect. She smashed 60 off just 33 balls to add to Gujarat’s woes. Her superb striking ensured that the Warriorz eclipsed the target with 4.2 overs to spare. Unfortunately for Gujarat, all their bowlers except Sneh Rana and Tanuja Kanwer were ineffective.

“She makes cricket look pretty easy…”

Speaking to the official broadcaster, JioCinema after the game, Healy was all praise for Harris who was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match for her destructive batting. “She makes cricket look pretty easy at the moment. Full credit to her, she batted outstanding tonight,” Healy said. Harris on her part, said that her success was owing to her calmness at the crease. “One ball at a time. I try not to get too flustered or frustrated as I have gotten older, learnt to control my emotions, go back to the basics, and watch the ball,” the all-rounder said. Beth Mooney, the skipper of the Giants acknowledged the disappointment in the camp but insisted that the team had good players who needed to be backed. “We have got some very good players in our team and we have got to stick to them,” the 30-year-old said.

The win has helped UP Warriorz to take points their tally up to 4 and they are currently 3rd on the points table. They will be delighted with their last couple of performances and will be eager to continue the good work. As for the Giants, they need to turn things around quickly if they want to avoid the wooden spoon which they ended up with last season.
