“Great decision by Morkel”- Fans react as Morne Morkel resigns as Pakistan’s bowling coach

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s horrendous 2023 World Cup campaign, the team’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel has resigned from his position. Morkel had joined the team in June on a six-month contract. In a Press Release, the Pakistan Cricket Board has mentioned that a replacement will be announced in due course of time.

Earlier this month, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the chief selector of the team, abruptly stepped down from his position amid the World Cup following allegations of conflict of interest. Inzamam is a shareholder in Yazo International Limited, a company owned by Talha Rehmani, who is a players’ agent, representing the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Despite their promising form leading up to the tournament, Pakistan’s performance fell short of expectations, resulting in a disappointing early exit. Their nine matches yielded only four victories, with three of those coming against struggling opponents. This underwhelming performance marked the third consecutive time Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals, leaving their fans disheartened.

Morkel’s position came under heavy scrutiny as the pace attack which was deemed as one of the best in the world ahead of the tournament, failed to live up to the expectations. The team lost the services of Naseem Shah ahead of the World Cup but even then, the pace attack was formidable. However, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf were nowhere close to their best with the latter in particular being off-colour.

Considering the way Pakistan performed in the marquee event, the resignations should not come as a surprise. A few more can be expected in the coming days, once a post-mortem of the tournament is done. There is also heavy deliberation on whether Babar Azam should carry on as captain or should the reins of the team be handed to someone else.
