Sri Lanka are currently playing three ODI match series against Afghanistan. The first two ODI games will be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. The last game will be played in Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla. Afghanistan won the toss and sent Sri Lanka to bat first. The Lankan openers out a partnership of 182 runs.
In the ongoing ODI match against Afghanistan, Pathum Nissanka has scored his fourth ODI century and has smashed his first against Afghanistan in the ODI format.
Pathum Nissanka scored his first double-century against Afghanistan in the first ODI in Pallekele. He scored 211 runs from 139 balls and has smashed 20 fours and 8 sixes on his way to a double century. He is the first Sri Lankan batter to score a double hundred in ODI cricket. He also become third third-fastest batter to score a double-century in an ODI.
Pathum Nissanka also surpassed Sri Lankan batter Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for most runs in ODI cricket. In 2000 Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 189 runs against India in Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
He is also playing his 50th ODI game. He scored his hundred in 88 balls. Pathum Nissanka’s brilliant batting performance helped Sri Lanka set a big target of 381 runs against Afghanistan. As the first innings came to an end Afghanistan players congratulated Pathum Nissanka for his double century.
He joins the elite group of players to achieve this feat. Ishan Kishan holds the record of the fastest batter to score a double century in ODI. In 2022, Ishan Kishan has smashed 200 runs in 126 balls against Bangladesh.
Followed by Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell who scored 201 runs from 128 balls in the 2023 ODI World Cup match against Afghanistan in Mumbai Wankhede stadium. Indian batter Rohit Sharma holds the record for most double centuries in ODI cricket. He has scored three double-hundreds to his name
